Perhaps the most prominent site in the center of Medicine Hat - across from City Hall, Riverside Veteran’s Memorial Park and the adjacent South Saskatchewan River - this empty plot has remained vacant for decades. Yet, this important boundary between the urban center and a line of parks and public institutions could become an important catalyst in the revitalization of downtown, as well as a new urban gateway on the South side of the river that reopens the river valley to the public. The M is a mixed-use building that includes various types of housing, offices (extension office space for the City of Medicine Hat) and retail. Various strategies enhance the permeability of the project while also addressing the street. Large housing slabs span between office / retail bars. By pulling away from the corner, the building provides a new plaza that mirrors the one in front of City Hall. The low point tower provides a landmark that marks arrival to downtown.
